What is self-talk? Self-talk is to communicate and talk to yourself. Self-talk is not meant to speak with words out of his mouth like when we talk to other people, but talking to thoughts inside our heads. Self-talk itself can be categorized into two types, namely positive and negative. Positive self-talk can improve our self-esteem, happiness, and motivate ourselves. While negative self-talk that can make us despair, fear, anxiety, and sadness.
Conscious or not, we do self-talk throughout the day and throughout life. Voices in our heads and our conversations with the mind was the one who inspires our actions in the situation. Agree or refuse, indecent or otherwise objectionable, or may not, be patient or anger, love or hate, all are examples of our actions, which usually begins with self-talk.
What are the adverse effects of negative self-talk?
1. Prejudice
What if I fail? What if not? What if he does not like me? What if I'm not accepted? When you are talking like this to yourself, then you're in the path of failure. Prejudice will only make you anxious about something that is not necessarily occur.
2. Stereotyping
Thinking stereotype or generalize everything. We put something or someone in the same category without regard to any individual. "All the guys just the same!", "All the joy, the same guy doang saucy girl!," All the girls just love his money! ". As a result of thinking like this, you will often feel paranoid about something and your social relations will be disturbed. You also do not realize that everyone is born unique.
3. Thinking in the extreme
Exaggerate things with words always and never. "I could never do that!". "I always fail!". "I've always hated people!". When you think extreme and does not correspond with reality, you will feel hopeless at doing something.
4. Living in the past
Always felt sorry for the incident or error in the past without trying to move-on. You keep repeating words like "Just yesterday I do not agree, must now do not like this", "I wish I could return the time" and so on. When you constantly say to yourself, you will never evolve in a positive direction because you just look back and bemoan your fate.
5. Limiting ourselves
Not confident that you can do greater things. "Well I can not possibly be, I'm not smart.", "I'm just doing the easy-easy Honestly." By limiting yourself like this, as if you did not realize that every human being was created to do great things. The problem is only the human mind alone.
6. Jump to conclusions
When we are in an uncomfortable situation, we will make assumptions and conclusions that do not necessarily occur. "He might not like me, I'm ugly", "I look like a fool when talking to him." Assumption like that would make us afraid or ashamed to do something.
7. Daydreaming
Daydreaming or fantasizing is thinking of something fun, imagination, and hope while we're awake. Actually daydreaming often used by writers, composers, novelists, filmmakers to produce ideas and works. But often many people who fantasize fun and when faced with how to realize their dreams, they will feel inferior (not capable), and re-imagining again. They constantly are in a vicious circle.
8. The words of others become part of us
Self-talk is usually greatly influenced by something that is instilled from the outside like parents, friends, or people who have influence. Thought they would become part of our self-talk. When thinking is a good thing then it will not be a problem, but when negative thoughts like "it's a difficult thing, you will not be able", "you do not deserve to use it" becomes part of your self-talk as well, then your mind is like not your own anymore.
Hopefully we can throw away all our negative self-talk and self-talk into positive
in order to avoid despair, fear, anxiety etc.
